The first lawn tennis tournament was held here in 1877. That is why the club is also called All England Tennis and Croquet Club. The first Wimbledon tennis tournament was played only for Gentleman’s singles title. The first title was won by Spencer Gore.
Initially the club had only one grass court but it has 19 courts available for the championship. This list includes 8 American clay courts, 5 indoor courts and 14 extra courts for practice sessions.
